Wheredle shows you a Google Street View scene each day and asks one question: which U.S. state is this? Guesses are limited, and after every miss the game points you toward the right answer with a directional arrow instead of just telling you no.

What is Wheredle?

Wheredle is a daily geography game built around a single Google Street View location. Instead of typing letters into a grid, you pick a U.S. state from a dropdown of all 50 and hit Submit. If your guess is wrong, an arrow appears showing which direction the correct state lies from the one you picked, so each miss narrows the map. You get a small, fixed number of tries per day; early coverage of the game reported the limit as six or seven attempts. The Street View scene itself is your clue sheet: road surface and lane markings, vegetation and terrain, architecture, and any signage caught in frame, and you can look around the scene the way you would in Google Maps.

Compared with most Wordle spinoffs, Wheredle swaps wordplay for geographic reasoning from a real photograph. It is closer in spirit to GeoGuessr, but compressed into one daily round with a fixed answer set of 50 states. That constraint changes how you think: instead of hunting for a country or a city anywhere on Earth, you are reading regional detail, the kind of road, the plant life, the building style, that separates one part of the United States from another.

Wheredle was created by developer Amber Sahdev and launched in 2022. It was covered by the mapping blog Maps Mania in March of that year and by PC Gamer that April, during the wave of new Wordle-style games; the site itself links the PC Gamer article. The site also states the game now runs on player submissions, with Street View finds sent to [email protected], and thanks its more than 500,000 players for over 6 million plays.

The overall feel is quieter and more observational than most -dle games. There is no keyboard to mash, just one scene, a dropdown, and the discipline of reading a place for the small details that give away where in the country it is. It rewards the kind of player who notices a Southwestern adobe roofline or a stretch of Midwestern flatland and can turn that into a real guess.

How to play Wheredle

1. Open Wheredle at wheredle.xyz.
2. Study the Google Street View scene shown for the day, looking at the road, signage, vegetation, and any buildings in frame.
3. Pick a U.S. state from the dropdown menu and submit it as your first guess.
4. If the guess is wrong, an arrow shows which direction the correct state lies from your guess.
5. Use that arrow to redraw your mental map and pick a state in the indicated direction.
6. Keep guessing until you land on the right state or run out of attempts. A new location arrives the next day.

Tips and strategy

• Look at the road itself first: pavement color, lane striping, and shoulder type vary by region and can rule out several states immediately.
• Check vegetation and terrain early. Palm trees, cactus, pine forest, and flat farmland each point to very different parts of the country.
• Use the directional arrow after every miss to actually redraw your mental map rather than guessing a random neighboring state.
• Do not ignore architecture. Roof pitch, siding material, and building style can separate Northeast, Southern, and Western states.
• Treat your first guess as a rough regional bet, like coastal versus inland or north versus south, and let the arrow narrow it down from there.
• If the scene shows any legible signage, that is usually the strongest single clue available. Prioritize reading it over general scenery.
