OpenGuessr
A free geography guessing game that drops you into a real Google Street View panorama and challenges you to pinpoint the location on a world map, solo or against other players.
OpenGuessr drops you into a Google Street View panorama with no location labels and asks you to place a pin on a world map as close to the real spot as you can. It runs in a browser, it is free with no daily play limit, and it can be played alone, against other players in real time, or head to head in 1v1 duels.
What is OpenGuessr?
OpenGuessr is a geography guessing game built around a simple loop: you are shown a street level panorama somewhere in the world, you look for clues (road signs, language, terrain, vegetation, the side of the road cars drive on) and then you drop a guess pin on a map. After you submit, the game reveals the true location and scores you on proximity. The closer your guess, the higher your score, the same scoring style used by the genre's best known game, GeoGuessr.
What sets OpenGuessr apart from that original is mostly about access. It is free to play with no daily round cap. Beyond standard singleplayer rounds, it supports real time multiplayer and 1v1 duels where two players guess on the same rounds, plus special modes like Country Guesser (name only the country) and Image Guesser, and optional restrictions such as grayscale view or no movement for extra challenge. The community has built tens of thousands of custom maps, and the developer runs a new daily competition seven days a week, giving players a recurring reason to come back beyond casual solo rounds.
The project comes from PaulPlay, an indie developer from Austria whose studio site (paulplay.studio) hosts the game's official page. A companion project, OpenGuessr Education, focuses on geography learning through quizzes and guides rather than head to head competition, and its code is public on GitHub. Around the main game a large community has formed, including a Discord server the developer reports at more than 30,000 members, where players contribute custom maps and competition ideas.
The overall feel is closer to a geography sandbox than a tightly timed daily puzzle. Because rounds can be played on demand, in custom community maps, or in the daily competitions, the reveal and feedback loop (see your guess pin, see the true location, see your score) repeats as many times as you want in a session rather than being rationed out once per day the way many other -dle style games are.
How to play OpenGuessr
- Open OpenGuessr at openguessr.com
- Start a round to load a Google Street View panorama with no location labels visible
- Look around the panorama for clues like language on signs, road markings, driving side, terrain, and architecture
- Drop your guess pin on the world map at the location you think the panorama was taken
- Submit your guess to see the true location and a score based on how close your pin was
- Move on to the next round, or switch into a custom community map, a multiplayer lobby, or a 1v1 duel
Tips and strategy
- Check which side of the road vehicles are driving on. It narrows the world down fast between left hand and right hand traffic regions
- Read any visible text on signs closely. Language and script can place you on a continent before you even look at the terrain
- Notice the color and material of road lines, utility poles, and guardrails. These vary by country and are a fast tell for veteran players
- In 1v1 duels, do not rush your first look around the panorama. Both players are working from the same round, so a careful first pass pays off
- Try a few community made custom maps, not just open world rounds. A map focused on one country or region rewards learning that region's specific visual cues
- If you are new, play casual singleplayer rounds first before jumping into a 1v1 duel or a daily competition so you get a feel for the scoring
