You swap tiles so each line of four resolves to a movie or a shared theme, working out the connections from actors, title words, characters, and plot details rather than typing a single answer. What is CineNerdle?

At its core, CineNerdle hands you a grid of 16 tiles. Each tile is a clue that can stand for any facet of a film: an actor, a word from the title, a character name, a piece of the soundtrack, a plot detail, a genre, or a setting. Your job is to swap tiles around until you have assembled rows or columns of four, where each line of four points to a single movie or a theme those movies share. Reports of the game cite a limit of about 15 swaps to finish the grid, so you cannot brute-force your way through and are rewarded for reasoning about which clues belong together.

What sets CineNerdle apart from most daily puzzle games is that it is a sorting problem rather than a guessing problem. Wordle-style games ask you to type a single answer and narrow it down with color feedback. CineNerdle instead asks you to organize partial knowledge: you may not recognize every clue, but if you can lock in one group of four, the remaining tiles become easier to place. The game also layers several distinct daily modes on top of the same grid. Original asks you to deduce five movie titles from clues that are not the titles themselves, for example working out Return of the Jedi from tiles like Space, Wookiee, George Lucas, and It's a Trap. Reversal gives you the movie titles and asks you to find the five themes that each link four of them, such as four films sharing a director or four titles that all contain a number. Logical adds placement constraints on top of a grand theme, for example putting the four Tarantino films in the four corners while keeping certain other films apart. Critical and Burgle are two further named modes. A separate style of puzzle hides a movie still behind 9 tiles and asks you to guess the film from as few flipped tiles as possible, where a wrong guess automatically flips another tile and the round ends on a correct guess or when all tiles are flipped.

CineNerdle was created by Nilanth Yogdasan, a PhD candidate at the University of Waterloo in Ontario, Canada. The game launched in its first form around 2022 to 2023 and built a following of film fans. It is free to play and ad-supported, with an optional premium subscription that removes ads, which the creator added in response to player requests. How to play CineNerdle

1. Open CineNerdle at cinenerdle.app and pick one of the daily modes, such as Original.
2. Read the 16 tiles on the 4x4 grid, treating each as a clue that could be an actor, title word, character, soundtrack, plot detail, genre, or setting.
3. Look for four clues that clearly point to one movie or share a theme, and treat that as your anchor group.
4. Swap tiles to line up your groups of four into rows or columns, spending swaps carefully since the grid is reported to allow only about 15.
5. Watch the grid resolve as correct groupings and placements lock in, and adjust the remaining tiles around what you have confirmed.
6. Return the next day for a fresh puzzle, or open the archive to play past daily and user-submitted puzzles.

Tips and strategy

• Start with the group you are most sure of. Locking in four clues removes them from the pool and makes the rest easier to sort.
• Read every tile before your first swap. A clue that looks like an actor might actually be a character name or a title word, and guessing early wastes swaps.
• Watch your swap count. With about 15 swaps reported per grid, plan moves that place two or more tiles closer to their spots rather than shuffling one at a time.
• In Reversal, focus on what four films have in common rather than any single title, since the movies are given and the theme is the answer.
• In Logical, use the placement constraints first, for example fixing the corner tiles a rule dictates, then fill the rest of the grid around those anchors.
• In the movie-still mode, hold your guess until the revealed image gives you enough, because a wrong guess auto-flips another tile and brings the round closer to ending.
