Spellify is EDHREC's daily word game for Magic: The Gathering fans, a hangman-style puzzle where a real card name is blanked out and you rebuild it one character at a time. The card sits in front of you with its art, rules text, and mana cost hidden, while its color and type line stay visible as a starting foothold. You get thirteen wrong guesses to name the card before the puzzle ends.

What is Spellify?

Spellify takes the familiar shape of hangman and pours Magic: The Gathering into it. Each day the game picks one card from the game's enormous history and obscures its name, art, and text, leaving you to deduce it by guessing letters, numbers, and Magic-specific symbols. Correct picks snap into their spots on the card, so the puzzle slowly redraws itself as you work. Because the answer is always a genuine card name, the game rewards what you already know about how Magic names creatures, instants, lands, and legendary characters.

What sets Spellify apart from Wordle-style guessers is that you are not solving a fixed five-letter grid. Your keyboard includes the full alphabet plus numbers and Magic iconography such as mana pips and the tap symbol, and a single answer can run to a long, multi-word card name. The visible color identity and type line act as clues rather than scoring feedback, narrowing the field before you ever touch a key. As characters fill in, the card's framing and revealed symbols often hint at the rest, turning the puzzle into a mix of word play and Magic knowledge.

The game began in March 2024 as a feature on Commander's Herald, a Magic fan site, and moved to EDHREC in July 2025, where it now lives alongside a Hard Mode and an EDHREC Crossword. Its arrival drew attention from across the Magic community, including notice from figures in the game's own design circles. EDHREC has signaled that account linking is planned so progress and statistics can be tracked over time, building on the local stats and streak tracking the game already keeps.

Feedback in Spellify is immediate and visual: a correct character appears in every place it belongs on the card, while a wrong guess chips away at your pool of thirteen misses. When you finish, you can share your result to social media or copy it to the clipboard, which makes it easy to compare runs with friends, a local game store crowd, or other players worldwide. The vibe is relaxed but knowledge-driven, generous enough for newer players to enjoy yet satisfying for veterans who can read a type line and guess the card almost on sight. If you want a sterner test, Hard Mode strips away the color and type clues entirely.

How to play Spellify

  1. Open the daily Spellify puzzle and read the visible color identity and type line of the hidden card.
  2. Use those clues to form an idea of what kind of card name you are chasing, such as a creature, instant, or land.
  3. Guess a letter, number, or Magic symbol you expect to appear in the card's name.
  4. Watch correct picks snap into every matching position on the card, and note your remaining wrong guesses.
  5. Keep guessing characters, or use the guess-card option to commit to a full name once you are confident.
  6. Solve the card before you reach thirteen wrong guesses, then try Hard Mode if you want the color and type clues removed.

Tips and strategy

  • Lead with common vowels and frequent consonants to expose the name's skeleton quickly across long, multi-word card titles.
  • Let the type line do real work, since creature, land, and instant names follow very different naming patterns in Magic.
  • Use the color identity to bias your guesses, because card names often echo their color's flavor and theme.
  • Hold off on number and symbol guesses until revealed letters point toward a specific card, so you do not waste misses.
  • Count word lengths as they fill in, since recognizing a famous two- or three-word card name early can save several guesses.
  • Once the card frame and partial text appear, lean on your Magic knowledge to commit to a full guess rather than burning misses one letter at a time.

Spellify FAQ

Is Spellify free?

Yes. Spellify is free to play in a web browser on EDHREC, with no purchase required to take the daily puzzle.

How many guesses do you get in Spellify?

You are limited to thirteen wrong guesses. Each incorrect letter, number, or symbol, plus a wrong full-name guess, counts against that total.

Is Spellify related to Wordle?

It shares Wordle's daily, shareable format but plays more like hangman: you rebuild a hidden Magic: The Gathering card name from letters, numbers, and Magic symbols rather than solving a fixed letter grid.

Who made Spellify?

Spellify debuted in March 2024 on Commander's Herald, a Magic fan site, and has been hosted by EDHREC since July 2025.

What is Hard Mode in Spellify?

Hard Mode further obscures the card by removing the color identity and type line clues, so you solve the name with less help.
